Community Bible Study: The King is Here

“The King is Here”:  A Study in Matthew’s Gospel

When Bill Gaither wrote the song The King is Coming back in 1962, it struck an immediate favorable chord with the Christian public. Its note of hope regarding Jesus’ kingly return resonated with believers from all walks of life.

When Matthew the tax collector, otherwise known as Levi, wrote his record of the life of Jesus Christ in the first century, he could easily have titled it “The King is Here”. In fact, the key phrase found in the gospel is “…the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3: 2, 4:17).

Matthew was written to Jewish citizens to answer questions about Jesus of Nazareth. Was He the Messiah predicted in Old Testament scriptures? Was His offer of a kingdom toIsraela legitimate offer? If so, why was it rejected? Will such a kingdom ever be established on earth? And it what form, if any, does His kingdom operate on earth today?

However, Matthew’s gospel is extremely relevant to believers today, according to SEBC president Dr Don Hawkins. “This is the gospel that presents in clear, pointed form, the ‘Great Commission’ to make disciples of all nations. Plus, Matthew is the only gospel with a direct reference to “My church” (16:18).

“This two-semester verse-by-verse study provides a valuable focus on the person of our Savior”, Dr. Hawkins observed. “These classes provide an excellent means for the college to serve the greaterBirminghamcommunity, and there is no charge to participate.”

Evening classes will begin Monday, September 9th at 7 p.m. and meet in classroom 244 (entrance A). Morning classes will begin Tuesday, September 10th at 10:30 a.m., and will also meet in classroom to 244.
