For immediate release:
Birmingham, Alabama– Dr. Don Hawkins, President, of Southeastern Bible College in Birmingham, has announced his resignation effective August 1, 2014.
In a letter to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Hawkins cited several factors, including family needs and a radio ministry opportunity, which led to his decision. Dr. Hawkins stated, “There is a part of me which is extremely reluctant to make this move, but prayer, time in the Scriptures, and godly counsel have indicated to me that this is the time.”
Dr. Hawkins announced his decision to faculty and staff at a meeting on March 13, and explained that he believed this move could strengthen both the administrative leadership and development initiative for the college. He explained, “I intend to offer my services to the board and my successor in a development capacity following the model utilized by other Bible college presidents. I would focus my time and energy on cultivating relationships with major supporters of the college, but would not be involved in administrative affairs. Kathy and I anticipate relocating toDallasin late summer, and I would anticipate returning toBirminghamperiodically to serve the college in this capacity.”
Dr. Mike McLemore, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Southeastern, responded to Dr. Hawkins resignation with the following statement: “We are saddened to see Dr. Hawkins resign because for the last 13 years he has provided dedicated leadership in many vital areas to move the college forward. He will be sorely missed by trustees, faculty, staff, student body, alumni, and the many friends that he and Mrs. Hawkins have endeared themselves to over the years. It has been a great joy to walk beside him in these days as a trustee but more important as a dear friend.”
According to Southeastern Provost Dr. Vicki Wolfe, “On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Hawkins for his faithful service to the college that spans over a decade. As President, he has played a key role in keeping Southeastern focused on fulfilling our mission and casting a vision for the future. We wish Dr. Hawkins and Kathy all the best as they transition into this next phase of life and ministry.”
During Dr. Hawkins years of service as President of Southeastern, the college has relocated to a new 22-acre campus, adopted a policy approach to trustee governance, completed two 10-year accreditation reaffirmations, launched the ACHIEVE degree completion program, and initiated the Because It Matters capital initiative.
Dr. Hawkins noted that Southeastern will move forward with strong leadership at several levels. “Our Board of Trustees has already begun the process of appointing a presidential search committee under the leadership of trustee Steve Gannett. With an outstanding and engaged Board of Trustees, and excellent leadership from our Provost Dr. Vicki Wolfe and our cabinet, our college is poised to continue fulfilling our vital mission of producing graduates who are biblically grounded, spiritually mature and culturally relevant.”
SEBC Trustee Chairman Dr. McLemore further noted, “The Board of Trustees will continue to build upon the legacy and solid foundation that all nine of our former Presidents have laid to enable Southeastern to fulfill its vision of equipping with academic and spiritual excellence.
Our faculty is academically and spiritually qualified to teach the Word of God; our outstanding administrative staff is second to none; our students are passionate about being trained and equipped to enter into ministry or other vocations to which God leads them with a strong Christian world view; and our alumni, friends and supporters are all ready for this next chapter of college life as God directs. We all stand together as a Christian College family with a renewed vision and spirit to be all that The Lord wants us to be.”
Dr. Hawkins, the ninth President of Southeastern, previously served as co-host and producer of the international Back to the Bible radio broadcast, as the host and executive producer of Life Perspectives radio, and as the Vice President and radio host of the Minirth Meier Clinic.
