SEBC Named to Honor Roll in 2009 Great Colleges to Work for Program

SEBC Named to Honor Roll in 2009 Great Colleges to Work for Program

In The Chronicle for Higher Education’s 2009 Great Colleges to Work For Program, Southeastern Bible College was one of 39 colleges named to the Great Colleges Honor Roll and one of 10 named in the Honor Roll for the small colleges division. SEBC was also cited in 13 individual categories and was one of three colleges in Alabama to receive recognition in the program. SEBC was the only Bible College to be honored on the Great Colleges Honor Roll.

The Chronicle’s Great Colleges to Work For program recognizes colleges for specific best practices and policies, such as compensation and benefits, faculty-administration relations, and confidence in senior leadership. There are 26 recognition categories for four-year institutions, and 15 categories for community colleges. Among four-year colleges, 122 institutions were recognized in at least one category. Among two-year institutions, 28 were recognized in at least one category.

Southeastern Bible College was recognized in 13 of the 26 individual categories. The categories were Healthy Faculty-Administration Relations; Collaborative Governance; Professional/Career Development Programs; Job Satisfaction; Work/Life Balance; Confidence in Senior Leadership; Internal Communications; Connection to Institution and Pride; Supervisor-Department Chair Relationship; Perception of and Confidence in Fair Treatment; Respect and Appreciation; Policies, Resources, and Efficiency; and Physical Workspace Conditions.

Thirty-nine colleges were also named to an Honor Roll, a new feature in this year’s program. The Honor Roll highlights the top 10 colleges in each size category (or the top three in the case of community colleges) based on the number of times they were recognized in the individual recognition categories. Southeastern Bible College was named in the Honor Roll for small colleges (fewer than 3000 students).

More than 300 colleges started the program, and 247 completed the entire process this spring. That’s nearly triple last year’s number of participants. The results are based on a two-part assessment process: a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional-support staff and an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies and practices from each institution. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback collected from the faculty and staff, and nearly 41,000 administrators, faculty members, and staff members participated nation-wide.

Dr. Don Hawkins, President for Southeastern Bible College, thanks all the employees for their role at the college. He says that the recognition in The Chronicle is an acknowledgement of the team God has assembled at the College and the efforts of each team member. Dr. Hawkins conveys, “To receive a ‘top ten’ nationwide recognition with the credibility of The Chronicle behind it is a tribute to God’s hand on our College.”

Michelle Hower, Coordinator for Institutional Effectiveness at SEBC, said 80% of eligible employees at the college participated in the survey. “This was SEBC’s first year to participate in the Great Colleges Program,” Hower said. “Our response rate was exceptional. We are delighted to be recognized for our outstanding qualities and to receive this valuable survey results to maintain and improve ourselves.”

Joining SEBC in the “Great Colleges to Work For” Honor Roll list among small colleges were
Austin College; Birmingham-Southern College; Furman University; Gettysburg College; Juniata College; Lourdes College; Morningside College; Saint Michael's College; and University of the Ozarks. Samford University was also recognized in 5 individual categories, and Moody Bible Institute was recognized in 2 individual categories.
